Santarém / Alter do Chão
Santarém can be a very good vacation destination if you’re interested in the Amazon region but don’t want a full deep-jungle expedition. Its biggest draw is nearby Alter do Chão, often called the “Caribbean of the Amazon,” with striking white-sand river beaches and clear freshwater lagoons. The area is great for boat trips, wildlife spotting, and experiencing Amazonian culture in a relatively accessible way. However, it’s not a highly polished tourist city, so the infrastructure is simple, and trips are more about nature and river experiences than urban comfort.
August through November is the best time to visit Alter do Chão when river levels are low.
